This month I think it is time to talk about home security which is something most people are concerned about . We have done this before but it never hurts to go over some of the precautions you can take to safeguard your property.

Windows- All windows should have a locking device , even basement windows and keep locked when away. Steel bars are available to cover basement windows.

Doors- Normal locks will not stop a break-in . Deadbolts on all outside doors are much better and door mounting screws should be 21/2 to 31/2 in. long. For glass doors , a wooden stick running from the inside door to the frame is needed .These should be at least 1” by 2” or more.

When planting shrubs or small evergreens , keep away from doors so that entrances are not hidden . Trim back plantings that obscure entrances and windows . Outside lighting should be bright enough that you can easily check for intruders Outside doors should have a small window or peep-hole lens so you can check visitors before unlocking door. Doors that have a window close to the door lock are often broken so they can reach through and unlock the door. Installing a sheet of polycarbonate should stop this.

What I have found very effective are motion lights installed to cover your driveway and front yard. Make sure you get the kind with a downward sensor as intruders often defeat them by coming around the back and standing directly underneath  Make sure you use high wattage floodlights. If you have a circular drive or one that allows you to park crossways of the lights, avoid this as the body of the car blocks the light and prowlers can come in on that side of the car. More on this subject next month.

Safety Tip- Do everything possible to avoid stopping on a freeway. This tip comes to you courtesy of Doug Annette and the Skid Control School at Oakville , Ont. www.skidcontrolschool.com
